Cosmic Multi-muon Bundles Measured at Delphi A
نویسندگان
چکیده
The DELPHI detector at LEP, located 100 m underground, has been used to detect the multimuon bundles by cathode readout of its hadron calorimeter and its tracking detectors (TPC, muon chambers). The experimental apparatus allows us to study muon bundles originating from primary cosmic particles with energies in the interval 10 10 eV . The cosmic events registered during the years 1999 and 2000 correspond roughly to 1.6 10 s of effective run time. The aim of the work is to compare the measured muon multiplicity distributions and predictions of high energy interaction models for different types of primary particles and also to determine the absolute flux of events in certain muon multiplicity range. The presentation describes the current status of the analysis.

متن کاملMuon Excess in Cosmic Rays and at CDF: Signs for a Hidden Sector?
In this letter we discuss a certain class of Hidden Valley models where the dynamics in the hidden sector are close to a strongly coupled conformal fixed point. We show that these models can explain the excess in cosmic ray muon events with high muon multiplicities that has been reported from cosmic ray studies with the ALEPH and DELPHI detectors. We further point out that these models can also...

We explore the discovery potential of cosmic ray physics experi-ments for Standard Model processes involving the nonperturba-tive production of >∼ O(α −1W ) ≃ 30 weak gauge bosons. Wedemonstrate an experimental insensitivity to proton-induced pro-cesses and emphasize the importance of neutrino-induced pro-cesses. The Fly’s Eye currently constrains the largest region ...

Underground muon events detected by the MACRO experiment at Gran Sasso have been studied for different purposes. The studies include the vertical muon intensity measurement, multiplicity distribution, lateral and angular muon distribution and searches for substructures inside muon bundles. These analyses have contributed to bring new insights in cosmic ray physics, in particular in the framewor...
متن کاملCharm muoproduction by cosmic rays
Narrow muon bundles in underground detectors permit to study muoproduction reactions that take place in the surrounding rock. We analyze the relevance of a QED+QCD reaction, muoproduction of “open charm”. The contribution to double muon events is estimated to be 4% of the one due to QED “trident” process, for an ideal detector located under a rock depth of 3 km water equivalent, and an observat...
